Outdoor lighting fixtures are an important feature to provide general illumination of streets and public spaces at night as well as for security.    Lighting fixtures, or luminaires, are used in street lamps and in parking lots and garages, in tunnels, on buildings, on roadway signage and more.  There are many different types of luminaires that provide different intensities of output for these various applications and these are continually being upgraded to comply with environmental and energy saving requirements.

Municipalities and utilities maintain these fixtures routinely.  In order to ensure that the proper lamps are installed in the appropriate fixtures, the lamps are labeled with a system that denotes the type of lamp and the wattage.
