Lockout/tagout prevents equipment from being used when there is a safety problem or maintenance issue. A lockout is a physical barrier to operation. A tagout on a breaker, switch, control device, or valve involves placing a tag, such as one that states "DANGER - Do Not Operate." Lockout devices make the equipment mechanically inoperable, while tagout makes this visually obvious by tag placement.
